Commissioned by CAG on the occasion of her solo exhibition, A Harlem Nocturne, this work is part of the terrain of research Bowen undertook in Vancouver in 2017-18, tracing a series of interconnected Black entertainers who formed an important but overlooked part of Vancouver’s  community from the 1940s to 1970s. Katherine Dunham was a renowned anthropologist and choreographer whose New York based dance company performed in Vancouver several times in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was also subject to an FBI investigation. Through a process of excavation and enlargement, Bowen activates the found document that evidences this surveillance and its racist undertones, revealing the pervasive discrimination that these highly visible, public Black figures endured.
