Point Grey Secondary School Senior Art Students with Diyan Achjadi and the Contemporary Art Gallery
May 10 – June 16, 2019
This spring, CAG worked with artist Diyan Achjadi in collaboration with Point Grey Secondary School’s senior art students and teachers on a project aimed at stretching the students’ understanding of artistic process. The project began with discussions around myth-making and its powerful role in attempting to make sense of the world.
Achjadi’s practice traces narratives of cross-cultural imaginings, influences and contaminations, re-translating and reinterpreting them through drawing, printmaking and animation. Over multiple workshops, the students used Achjadi’s artistic strategies as a starting point to create new work through a process of translation and distortion in scale, medium and form, ultimately mirroring the way in which myths travel across time and space.
