Wolfgang Weileder Residency
On October 11, 2018, German artist Wolfgang Weileder gave a talk at the Roundhouse Community and Recreation Centre as a means to introduce his work to local audiences at the beginning of a longer term residency period that will unfold over the next two years. He gave an overview of his practice including large-scale temporary public works and interventions as well as his related photographic, film and video pieces produced over the last 10 years.
Weileder has been in Vancouver and working with CAG as part of a longer term research position affiliated with the University of Victoria. While in residence at the Burrard Marina Field House from September 17 to October 21, he worked with the Vancouver Park Board visiting various sites across the Lower Mainland as the teams were dealing with tree felling as part of their annual maintenance of parks, Arboretum and other green areas. Weileder has developed a series of new photographic work in which for the first time, he began to explore new methodologies of how changes in space can be captured and recorded using specially modified analogue and digital cameras. While these images are in their very early stages, Weilder is continuing this work in other cities in Canada and Europe to record moments when the landscape is changed. CAG plans to bring Weileder back to Vancouver in 2020 to present some of this work in a series of public realm presentations.
