Liz Magor
Smokey (2008)
Polymerized gypsum
Unlimited edition, unsigned

Currently available for purchase at the CAG is Liz Magor’s small and humorous sculpture Smokey. The edition was published by the CAG for its 20th Annual Gala Dinner and Art Auction (October, 4, 2008).

Smokey reflects Magor’s overarching practice involving uncanny casts of recognizable, everyday objects, such as cigarettes and hot dog buns. Using polymerized gypsum, Magor plays with the tension between what is literal and what is representational, interrupting our sense of comfort with familiar things. With cheeky compositions that are unsettling overtime, Magor sparks narratives around and questions about the characters and environment which nurture and produce these assemblages. What kind of world has shaped these anonymous beings that compulsively collect and hoard everyday consumer objects and their copies?

Smokey can be purchased at the CAG bookshop in person.
