Emerging Dance Summer Intensive:
Call for participants aged 17 to 25yrs old

This July, Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) with support from the BC Arts Council Youth Engagement Program is launching Summer Intensive, a ten week course for emerging artists interested in cross-disciplinary movement-based performance. Led by four established artists, this innovative course offers one-to-one mentorship. Over twenty sessions, the group will consider the intersection between dance, choreography and visual art, culminating in the creation and production of a new choreographic work by participants. This short course program offers training on the concepts and logistics of developing choreographic works, introducing young artists to established artists, choreographers, performers, dancers, through studio and gallery visits, reading/discussion groups, and workshops. The program is designed to immerse participants in a rigorous schedule that supports the process of developing an idea into a performance targeting self-motivated individuals who would benefit from a summer of discussions around the issues and questions that arise for emerging artists today.
The Summer Intensive is part of the CAG’s two month residency with artist Brendan Fernandes at the Burrard Marina Field House Studio. Participants will engage and respond to Fernandes’ practice interrogating their own perceptions of diaspora and cultural identity in relation to authenticity. While in Vancouver, Fernandes will undertake new research exploring the gendered and queer male body in ballet, questioning hierarchies that dance notionally suggests via a fetishization of the body. Having formerly studied ballet and modern dance techniques, and left due to injury, Fernandes seeks to explore the ways that this art form has affected and shaped his sense of self, as a means to recover the language of movement embodied within his own identity. Fernandes will work with a ballet foot stretcher, a wooden device used to develop the ‘perfectly’ formed arch in a dancer’s foot. Considering the rigid physical requirements and its effect on those who attempt to fit the mould, Fernandes proposes to develop a performance with associated photographs utilizing architectural supports such as walls, floors, pillars and support beams to explore gesture and movement with this device attached to his body. Marking a new departure for the artist, this work continues his ongoing concerns relating to aesthetics and desires within a consideration of his own histories and identity. Delia Brett is a Vancouver-based dancer, choreographer and teacher. She has been a company member of Vancouver’s Contact Dance based company EDAM Dance since 1997. She has performed with Lola Dance, Trial and Eros, Co. Erasga, Battery Opera, Kinesis Somatro and many others. In 2005, she joined forces with her long time friend and creative partner Daelik, to co-direct MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society. MACHiNENOiSY’s work has been presented at a variety of venues throughout BC and Vancouver and has toured to Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Toronto, San Francisco and Seattle. MACHiNENOiSY’s recent productions include, BAMBOOZLED (2013), New media and Dance production, Law of Proximity: created with and about queer youth, 2012 and Delia’s multimedia, assisted solo, plaything (2011). Delia and Daelik are premiering a new, full-length production, Time Machine, at The PuSh Festival 2015.
Justine A. Chambers is a Vancouver-based contemporary dancer, choreographer and teacher. Her choreographic projects have been presented by Western Front, EDAM, Dances for a Small Stage, Dance Saskatchewan, Dancing on the Edge Festival, New Dance Horizons, The Roundhouse Community Arts Centre and Vancouver Art Gallery. In December of 2012 she collaborated with visual artist, Brendan Fernandes, on the creation and performance of The Working Move, which was remounted at The Stedelijjk museum in April of 2014. Other collaborations with visual artists include Colour Lines (2009) with Kristina Podesva, Stack of Moves (2013-14) with Jen Weih and Is there anything left to be done at all (2014) with Marilou Lemmens and Richard Ibghy. Throughout July of 2013, Chambers toured Bali with Gamelan Gita Asmara performing, Sphinx, a solo created in collaboration with contemporary gamelan composer, Michael Tenzer. She leads classes in contemporary dance technique and creation strategies/tactics, at Arts Umbrella, Working Class, Toronto Community Love-In, Modus Operandi, Ballet BC and Ryerson University. Justine is currently one of five artists in residence at ten fifteen maple (tenfifteenmaple.org).
Brendan Fernandes is a visual artist working between Toronto and New York City. He has exhibited internationally including exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Museum of Art and Design, New York; Art in General, New York; the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Mass MoCA; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Bergen Kunsthall; Manif d’Art: The Quebec City Biennial; The Third Guangzhou Triennial and the Western New York Biennial through the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. He recently debuted a new performance at the Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY and participated in Stage It! (Part 3) — SCRIPTED at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2014). Upcoming shows are scheduled for the Brooklyn Museum and Seattle Art Museum. His work is represented by Diaz Contemporary, Toronto.
Daelik is a Vancouver-based dancer, choreographer, improviser, teacher and dramaturge, with a performance history of over 25 years. He was a company member of EDAM (Canada’s pre-eminent Contact-based Contemporary dance company) for 6 seasons and has worked in Canada with, among others, Kinesis Dance, DanStaBat, Co. Erasga, Benoit Lachambre, and Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers in the works of: Julia Sasso, Serge Bennethan, and Roger Sinha. In Europe he has worked with Welsh dance theatre company Earthfall (Cardiff), Angela Guierrero (Hamburg), Tanzcompagnie Rubato (Berlin) and Be van Vark (Berlin). In 2002 he formed his own company MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society, with a mandate to foster the research and creation of performances that transcend traditional notions of dance and theatre. Daelik is a teacher of Contact Improvisation, drawing on over 24 years of experience practicing the form. In 2012 Daelik was the recipient of the Dance Victoria Crystal Dance Award.

Broken City Lab

Broken City Lab is an artist-led collective that works through collaborative social practice and creative research to understand the ways in which locality is shaped and enacted in the city. Taking the form of events, workshops, installations, and interventions, their projects aim to connect various disciplines and critique, annotate and re-imagine the cities that they encounter, and have unfolded in collaboration with numerous organizations and institutions. They currently operate CIVIC Space in downtown Windsor, Ontario, a 24-month long project exploring the intersection of art and civic life. As part of the Field House Studio Residency members will embark on site-specific research towards a new project that explores and makes visible issues at the intersection of education, public space and civic life. This new project will develop a sequence of programming that circulates in and around the Burrard Marina Field House.
Broken City Lab’s work recently appeared in the th International Venice Biennial of Architecture as part of the Grounds for Detroit exhibit and the collective was long-listed for the Sobey Art Award. Previous projects have included working with the City of Windsor’s Transit Authority to install community-created text-based art in its buses; interactive outdoor projections detailing hundreds of ideas for saving the city; the design and distribution of removable micro-gardens; interactive text-based performance soware; large-scale messages projected across an international border; artists hosted for an interdisciplinary storefront residency project; a foot long message painted on a parking lot visible from planes and satellites; and leading numerous psycho-geographic walks, DIY workshops and community brainstorming sessions in cities all

Marie Lorenz – visit and upcoming 2014 project
This December 2013, Marie Lorenz will visit Vancouver to begin research for a project to be completed in May 2014 at the Burrard Marina Field House.
Marie Lorenz’s work combines psycho-geographic exploration with highly crafted, material forms. In her ongoing project The Tide and Current Taxi, (http://www.tideandcurrenttaxi.org/) Lorenz ferries people on the East and Hudson Rivers surrounding New York City in a boat she has specially made. Lorenz studies tidal charts of the New York Harbor and uses river currents to direct and drift the boat throughout the waterways of the City. The act of floating adds a specific presence to one’s own observation: the viewer maintains an awareness of their own balance and form as they absorb the details in their surroundings. This kind of observation creates something new out of something familiar. For Vancouver Lorenz will begin to develop ideas and discussion toward constructing a new vessel and mapping local waterways in which the community will play an important role as participants.

Canadian artist Raymond Boisjoly was our inaugural resident artist at the Burrard Marina Field House Studio. For six months Boisjoly occupied the Field House, using it as a studio and a place for community engagement.

The Field House Studio is an off-site artist residency space and community hub organized by the Contemporary Art Gallery. This initiative seeks to support artists whose practice moves beyond conventional exhibition making, echoing the founding origins of the gallery where artists were offered support toward the production of new work. Our goal in presenting art outside of the boundaries of our exhibition spaces is to reach out to communities, offering new ways for individuals to encounter and connect with art and artists, expanding audiences as well as strengthening our commitment to nurturing artists through example, context and commissioning.
Running parallel to the residency program is an ongoing series of public events for all ages.

Langlois discussed his work as co-founder and research director of Broken City Lab, an artist-led interdisciplinary creative research collective and non-profit organization working to explore locality, infrastructures and creative practice leading towards civic change. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Windsor. In the fall of 2013, he will join the Faculty of Culture + Community at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

This first talk presented collaborators Zoe Kreye and Catherine Grau who were working on a public project throughout Vancouver entitled Unlearning Weekender, a project by Goethe Satellite @ Vancouver, created in cooperation with Dance Troupe Practice, Windsor House School, Public Dreams and Revised Projects. They discussed the series of workshops which invited the public to create rituals as a means of challenging invisible social structures aiming to strengthen community bonds.
Free drop-in art activities for all ages which responded to the work of Raymond Boisjoly and CAG exhibitions.
Saturday August 24 – A free all ages drop-in art activity: making pin-wheel windmills.
Saturday July 27 - We welcomed art makers of all ages to the Field House, participants learnt the basics of printmaking by making their own styrofoam relief prints.
Saturday June 29 - All ages of visitors dropped by the Field House for a marine mobile workshop, constructing easy-to-make kinetic sculptures which took the marine world as a theme.
The Field House Studio Residency Program is generously supported by the Vancouver Park Board and the City of Vancouver. The inaugural residency with Raymond Boisjoly was supported by the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology.

Join our summer artist in residence Brendan Fernandes for a unique life drawing class focused on the dancer’s foot. Fernandes has invited dancers from BC Ballet to model their well-trained feet for drawing. Basic drawing materials will be supplied (paper, pencils, conte and charcoal) but participants are welcome to bring their own.MORE
Recently Burrard Marina Field House artist-in-residence Brendan Fernandes held a life drawing class at the CAG. The gallery was buzzing with over twenty-five artists and the model, Rachel Meyer, a member of Ballet BC. Fernandes worked with Rachel to create a multitude of poses on various sized plinths that highlighted her feet and encouraged participants to focus on this area.
The drawing tasks varied from 30 seconds to 5 minutes then 20 minutes poses. It was really amazing to see the range of differences in drawing style and form that everyone used to interpret Rachel’s poses. We got great feedback from the participants and we’re hoping to hold more life drawing classes at the CAG in the future.

This week the CAG’s Summer Dance Intensive Program attended a movement workshop run by Delia Brett and Daelik of MACHiNENOiSY Dance Society. Delia and Daelik led a workshop that taught the participants to collaborate with their instincts and movements and not to rely on verbal forms of communication.
The embodied exercises led the group to think about creation and rehearsal techniques that they can bring forward with them as they begin to conceptualize their final projects. Delia and Daelik’s teachings and exercises were really engaging and allowed for the participants to get to know each other’s practice and methods for creation.

“What if where you are right now is all you need to be?”
This was a question Christopher House repeatedly asked us during his “Dancing in the Now” workshop. The CAG’s Youth Summer Intensive participants and mentors were lucky enough to participate in a very thought-provoking, educational, and exciting two hour workshop with Toronto based choreographer, Christopher House. As a part of the 2014 Dancing on the Edge programming, Christopher House performed a piece co-choreographed by Deborah Hay entitled The Body in Question. His final performance was Friday, July 11th 2014- check the Dancing on the Edge website for more schedule and programming information.
The Contemporary Art Gallery launched their Summer Youth Intensive, a ten week course for emerging artists interested in cross-disciplinary movement-based performance last week. Led by four established artists, the 11 participants are considering the intersections between dance, choreography and visual art, culminating in the creation and production of a new work. A part of this intensive allows for the participants to attend workshops, artists talks and studio visits, and Christopher House’s workshop was one of them!
House’s workshop encouraged the participants to dance in the “now”, to really focus on the embodied present and not to second guess our actions. In encouraging us to move in the “ways that we see the space around us”, House taught us about giving our bodies agency, timing and to consider the differences between space and place.
After the workshop, House stayed to speak with our group where he answered our questions about his work and regarding our individual practices. He shared methodological and creation process tips that will be useful for the Summer Intensive group as they move into developing their own works!
This group is ambitious, talented and inspiring- I can’t wait to follow their process during this summer intensive!

Last week I attended my first artist talk as the CAG’s Learning and Public Program assistant. New York and Toronto- based artist Brendan Fernandes is currently in Vancouver for a two month residency at the CAG Burrard Marina Field House Studio.
While in residence Fernandes will be developing a new solo dance piece, co-mentoring a summer intensive youth dance program, and leading a life drawing class that focuses on the dancer’s foot. On Tuesday, June 10th Fernandes gave an artist talk at the CAG where he led us through the creation, rehearsal, and performance processes of his recent works; The Working Move (2012), Encomium (2011), and Night Shift (2011).

Brendan’s talk was as charming and insightful as his work, which engages with various disciplines including visual arts, dance, performance and theatre. He explained how his work focuses on corporal and embodied lived experiences—which raises questions about “liveness versus stillness”, “space and audience” and “single action versus relational action”. The focus on the body challenges us to re-examine the aesthetics of his works—how do we react as spectators when the body becomes the object, the subject, the artifact and the archive? Fernandes’ works question how we conceive the space, time and performative codes of bodies moving in gallery and museum spaces. I’m stoked to follow Fernandes’ process this summer and find out how the new projects are shaping up!

Brendan Fernandes, the CAG’s summer artist in residence has begun the creation process for his new work! I had the pleasure to visit Brendan during one of his rehearsals earlier this week. Fernandes talked about how he will incorporate themes of labour, the duration of time, notions of self-hood and identity into the creation of this piece.
He is challenging the notion of muscle memory and exploring ideas around the foot as a fetishized object. I’m excited to see how Fernandes will integrate notions of stillness and repetition into his piece. We will be following Fernandes’ creation and rehearsal process over the next few weeks, and stay tuned to find out details regarding his open in-progress performance.

My name is Lindsay Lachance, this Summer’s Learning and Public Programs Assistant and I am excited to be working with Shaun Dacey, Curator of Learning and Public Programs and other staff and volunteers at the CAG. I’ve just completed the first year of my PhD in Theatre and First Nations Studies at the University of British Columbia. I will be contributing to the CAG blog via interviews with artists, reviews, and news on upcoming learning events and residencies.
