Hello CAG Blog readers,

My name is Stephan Garneau and I am this summer’s Event and Marketing Assistant charged with organizing works for the CAG’s Annual Gala and Art Auction. This year’s auction will again be held at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia on November 2nd 2013, so save the date in your diary.

I would like to introduce myself and express how much I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to CAG’s operations. I am well aware of the desirability of the position and intend on doing my best work.

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, I attended the University of Alberta for four years, taking a variety of courses with a concentration in Commerce. I have since completed two years (entering my third) of Communication Design at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. I am also an avid attendee of live music, painter of unsettling portraits and an infrequent jogger.

Part of my position at the CAG entails researching local and international artists and their works. For each work/artist I will be writing catalogue descriptions that will inform and entice bidders. As I enter week three, my research and correspondence with the participating artists is steadily building.

Though I plan to work in the Design field, I am very interested in contemporary art practices as vital grounds for social and cultural critique. Working at the CAG has augmented my knowledge of contemporary art issues and the relevant figures from our region. I intend on using what I learn this summer, in particular works/themes I have come across and even the role of CAG in the community, in my own practice.

The developing auction list is so far very exciting and diverse, representing a range of mediums and periods. The final collection will indeed appeal to all tastes and interests.

Rest assured more updates to come.

Stephan
