The Canadian artist collective, General Idea was founded in 1969 by Felix Partz (Canada, 1945-94), Jorge Zontal (Italy, 1944-94), and AA Bronson (Canada, b.1946), who lived and worked together for 25 years until the death of Partz in 1994 and Zontal later that year. Together they produced a complex body of work that critically engaged popular media and other forms of representation. In 1974, GI founded Art Metropole, (Toronto), an organization devoted to artists' books, multiples, audio and video, and through which they published File Magazine from 1972 to 1989.
