Liz Magor

Liz Magor (b.1948, Winnipeg) is a Vancouver-based sculptor. Her recent body of work principally consists of detailed painted casts of ordinary objects or animals, from ashtrays to tables; candy wrappers to articles of clothing and rodents to birds. She stacks the objects in hierarchical compositions that indirectly form narratives, where the relation between represented objects establishes an order of signification. In 2001 she received the Governor General's Visual and Media Arts Award. She has exhibited widely including representing Canada at the Venice Biennial and participating in Documenta 8, Kassel, Germany. Her solo exhibitions include This Place, the Vancouver Art Gallery (2004); a self titled exhibition, the Power Plant, Toronto (2003), and The Mouth and Other Storage Facilities, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle. She currently teaches at Emily Carr University of Art And Design and is represented by Equinox, Vancouver and Susan Hobbs, Toronto.
