James Carl (b.1960, Montréal) is well known for his use of unexpected, often precious, materials to sculpt everyday objects. For an early work, Carl turned the packaging from major household appliances into a cardboard dumpster; for a later work he carved a microphone out of jade. Recently Carl has used Venetian blinds to build large abstract sculptures. do you know what, a retrospective of Carl's work, was exhibited at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto (2008). Recent solo exhibitions include jalousie, Galerie Heinz-Martin Weigand, Karlsruhe, Germany (2007); negative spaces at Florence Loewy, Paris (2006); and plot, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2003).
